2017 SportsFest Activities

For the second time in two years, Samaritan’s Place’s (SP) Sports Fest was packed with fun and action as the Lee University’s Health, Exercise Science, Secondary Education (HESSE) Team led the May 26 & 27, 2017 event in Silang, Cavite.

SP’s Sports Fest, an annual community event, is strategically aimed at involving Barangay Biluso’s community children and youth. As in previous years, the 2017 participants were grouped into four color teams namely, blue, red, yellow and green.

Teams competed in sports events such as the 100-meter dash, 200-meter dash, 300-meter relay, obstacle course, pick-up sticks, Maria Goes to Market, tug of war, balloon toss, basketball and volleyball. The colored teams also showcased their talents in a special cheering competition judged by SP Board member Mrs. Weng Torres and the HESSE team leaders.

In 2016, a Lee University Sports Team headed by Prof. Mike Iosia and assisted by Dr. Taz Kicklighter came for the most anticipated event. This year, Dr. Kickllighter returned as the head leader with professors Delia Price, Pam Womack and husband Tim as team leaders.

The Blue Team emerged as the over-all 2017 champion. Red Team placed second while the Yellow and Green Teams landed third and fourth places, respectively.

Blue Team Celebrates

Meanwhile, the Green Team took pride in winning the cheering competition this year.

All the team’s original cheers were judged on creativity/choreography, originality, showmanship/performance value and crowd appeal.

Dr. Kicklighter closed the event by giving an encouraging message. He shared words from Isaiah 40:30-31, ” Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.”

He encouraged the young people that they could always find rest in God whenever they found themselves tired and weary.

Sports Clinic 2017

The Lee HESSE Team also conducted a sports skills training clinic on June 1 to 2 at Brgy. Biluso. Around 90 community children and youth attended the two-day sports clinic. The HESSE team demonstrated and taught basic skills in volleyball and basketball. Dribbling, passing and shooting were among the basketball skill drills they implemented.

Group games like the parachute popcorn toss, along with water balloon volleyball, relays like over and under, beach ball, water bucket and balloon toss were played for the little children. At the end of the event, the HESSE Team gave special awards to the participants who showed exemplary character/performance during the activities.

Taylor teaches a little one!

Prof. Pam Womack shared an inspiring story about one of her students in US on the last day. “If you were my students, you will love me as your teacher because I am teaching different sports. But I have one special student who unexpectedly taught me something instead,” Prof. Womack said.

The student had a physical disability but this didn’t limit her to learn sports and do things like what students without the any disability. She quoted a verse from Philippians 4:13 which says, “I can anything through Christ who strengthens me.” Like her student, she emphasized for the clinic participants that they can also do anything because of Jesus Christ.

The HESSE 2017 crew!

The Lee HESSE student team members included Lindsay Jones, Taylor Jones, Bethany Wiliam, Anna Davis, Keevin Tyus, Jeong Shin Min, Benji Vigil and Austin Rogers. SP Summer of Service (SOS) volunteers, Audrey McLamb and Caitlin Wall, helped and assisted in all the sports activities, which included a swim day at Riviera Golf and Sports Club.
